Lost/Stolen Passports

If you believe that your U.S. passport has been lost or stolen, you should immediately inform the Consular Section at the U.S. Embassy in Damascus. We will guide you through the process of getting a new passport, and see if your passport has been returned to us.

When you report a passport as having been lost or stolen, you must provide complete details regarding the loss – where and when it was stolen; efforts to recover the passport; and any other information you have. On February 10, 2008, the Syrian government issued new requirements regarding lost/stolen passport. The new steps to be followed are:

1. IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE CONSULAR SECTION AT THE U.S. EMBASSY IN DAMASCUS;

2. Report the loss to the Department of Immigration and Passports;

3. The Department of Immigration and Passports will transfer you to the appropriate police department to file a report;

4. Visit the nearest Political Security branch to report the loss/theft and verify your legal status in Syria;

5. File a copy of the police report with the Department of Immigration and Passports within 96 hours of the loss/theft;

When steps 2-5 are completed, the Department of Immigration and Passports will issue a letter for you to bring back to the Embassy to file with your application for a replacement passport.

When making an application for a replacement passport, you must use the regular passport application DS-11, submit the required passport-sized photographs, and pay the required fee. You must complete the "STATEMENT REGARDING LOST OR STOLEN PASSPORT" DS-64 form, which is also available at our office. The police report and letter from the Department of Immigration and Passports (described above) should be translated into English and submitted as well.

ONCE THE PASSPORT IS REPORTED LOST/STOLEN, IT MAY NOT BE USED, EVEN IF IT IS RECOVERED. All Syrian ports of entry/exit will be notified and anyone attempting to use the lost/stolen passport will be arrested and transferred to Political Security for verification of status; once that is done, they will be turned over to Syrian Immigration for further processing.
