PASSPORT SERVICES

All Americans residing in Syria should hold valid U.S. passports. No single document is more important to an American citizen residing overseas. We urge you not to let your passport expire nor delay in making application for renewal of passports. Applications for renewal of passports may be made within one year prior to the date of expiration of the passport.

All American citizens must appear in person at the Consular Section of the Embassy in order to apply for a new passport.  He or she must present evidence of U.S. citizenship (normally a current or recently expired U.S. passport, a U.S. birth certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad).  There are three categories of passport services:

Parents who wish to apply for an initial passport or renew a passport for a child under the age of 16 years must present the child at the time of submission of the application form DS-11.  Both parents must be present in order to sign the application.  If one parent cannot be present, that parent must complete, sign, and notarize an official consent form.  For detailed instructions, please refer to the Special Requirements for Children Under Age 16 section of the State Department’s website.  You may also contact the Consular Section for more information on how to apply for children under the age of 16 years.

For all children under the age of 16 years, the passport renewal fee is $85 USD and the validity of the passport is 5 years.

American citizens age 16 and over who are either first-time applicants born in the States or renewing a 5-year validity passport to a 10-year validity passport must complete the application form DS-11, pay the  passport fee of $100 USD, and bring their most recent passport and three passport-size photographs.

American citizens renewing a 10-year validity passport must complete the application form DS-82, pay the passport fee of $75 USD, and bring their most recent passport and three passport-size photographs.

New passports are normally ready to be collected within ten to fourteen days. When a passport is issued, the previous passport is canceled and returned to the bearer. It is the responsibility of the passport holder to make application to Syrian Immigration for the transfer of his or her Syrian visa into the new passport.

The Consular Section will continue to issue passports in limited emergency cases only.  Such passports will be limited in validity, and cannot be extended.  Bearers will be required, however, to exchange their limited validity passports for a full-validity photo-digitized passport upon completion of their emergency travel, both through passport facilities in the U.S. and U.S. Embassies and Consulates abroad.

An American citizen can also add extra pages to a passport when necessary, at no extra charge.

Parents who wish to add extra pages to their child's passport must provide the following:

  1. Child's valid U.S. passport.
  2. Child's birth certificate.
  3. Parental Appearance and signature.
  4. Parental identification.
  5. DSP-19 Form.

Personal appearance of the child in the case of adding pages is not required.
